the crow review 2

Alex Proyas directed a sensational film based on James O'Barr's comic book limited series the CROW in 1994. A very personal and cathartic revenge fantasy story written by O'Barr, after a tragic event in his own real life. Brandon Lee delivered an explosive and star making performance as Eric Draven, a young rock guitarist who along with his fiancee Shelly, are brutally killed by a ruthless gang of criminals. Exactly one year after his death, Eric returns and is watched over by a hypnotic Crow and sets out to seek revenge on the gang of thugs that murdered him and his fiancee. One by one he picks them off leading him to the crime lord that orchestrated his and Shelly's demise. While this movie isn't a hundred percent true to the source material it is a hundred percent true to the heart and soul of the original story written and illustrated by O'Barr, and is just as dark and gritty. In my opinion it was the best movie adaption of a comic book I'd ever seen of that time. Achieving legendary status for it's star Brandon Lee, who unfortunately was accidently killed during filming of The Crow. When watching Lee as Eric Draven, it's hard not to wonder what might have been. What other roles he could have played with just as much passion and intensity we saw him invoke in the Crow. Brandon Lee's performance is pure poetry in motion in the Crow. In other films like Rapid Fire or Show Down in Little Tokyo, Lee always brought his a-game with his martial arts and acrobatics and had real charisma but in the Crow he proved he had real acting chops.

the crow-1994 review

The Crow is a gothic nightmare. With a view of Detroit that is every bit as bleak and dazzling as the urban panoramas presented in Batman and Blade Runner, this film makes it clear from the outset that wherever its flaws may lie, they will not be in the realm of visual presentation. Indeed, not only is The Crow a feast for the eyes, but it collides violently with another sense, utilizing a high decibel soundtrack to keep the energy level up.
